Medieval Festival : Volterra AD1398

19th  and 26th  August  (two weekends) 2012

This is the 15th year that Volterra has ‘gone native’ for two superb weekends in August. The entire population dresses up in medieval costumes and the town centre is transformed into a marketplace from 500 years ago. The Volterrani, looking like Renaissance oil paintings, show off their trades and skills and all the fun of the fair. Jousting, flag throwers, archery in the main piazza,  jugglers, street entertainers and musicians perform, whilst the processions of dignatories from different contrade  (neibourhoods) parade up and down with their flags, beating their drums. All the shady stone alley ways are transformed into stalls selling home made candles, cheese, wine, typical food of the day, whilst tin smith,  log cutters and the leather merchants all demonstrate their skills that even today are part of the rich tradtion of Tuscany.  Visitors are also encouraged to hire costumes or dress up in improvised garb, to learn the ancient dances and join in the jigs in the square. It is an irrestible event, most especially for kids, or romantic grown-ups who want a geniune taste of the past.
